Things to do in Erie

Even though the Star's & Stripes Invitational is hosted in Erie (heart of the snow belt) in the middle of Winter, there is still a ton of fun in Erie.  First off, we do get a lot of snow, however knowing that, Erie is really well equipped to deal with the snow.  Erie annually get an average of 110 inches of snow.  My son is currently in 8th grade.  Since Kindergarten the school has closed once due to snow.  What we don't do is just sit around doing nothing.  There is lots of interesting things to do on your visit here to mini-Alaska.

Below are a few of my recommendations with links to their sites.  If you have any specific questions or interests - please feel free to email any questions.  For example, Ice Fishing is popular here, however I don't really think of it as a family activity so I didn't list it, however if you're interested drop me an email.

How to dress when in Erie.  We recommend a warm hat kind of like the one Santa wears.  The hat should have a tassel on the end.  This comes in handy as a mouth gaurd to put between your teeth when they start to chatter.  We also recommend a warm leotard.  As shown in the picture to the left, some people in Erie wear Unitards that really help keep your legs warm.

Splash Lagoon Indoor Water Park & Resort

Splash Lagoon Indoor Water Park is really popular with the gymnastics Families.  It's kept at a humid 85 degrees.  There are numerous water slides, a lazy river, pool, hot tub....  While the kids swim, the adults can visit the Island Oasis Bar & Lounge for their own fun.  Splash lagoon also has Lazer Tag, a huge arcade, a grill....  It's fun for the whole family, and my kids like to have their Birthday Parties there. This is Splash Lagoon! Swirling Body and Tube Slides, Lazy River, 3 Story Tiki Tree House with 1000 Gallon Tipping Bucket! All Under one Massive Roof!
Peek'n Peak Ski Resort is just 20 minutes from Erie.  They have 27 slopes for all skill levels - 8 chair lifts, rentals, lodging....  They also have giant tube rentals which is great family fun and fun for the teams.
Millcreek Mall
Shopping
Plaza
Millcreek Mall Shopping Plaza -  The Millcreek Mall is Erie's largest shopping complex.  There are over 160 stores located in the Mall.  PA does not charge sales tax on clothing, so this is a popular tourist destination for shoppers from Canada & New York.  There are many major retailer as well as numerous specialty shops.  There is a Food Court, Theater, and many Restaurants on the property.

Discover Presque Isle

GoErie Presque Isle
Presque Isle State Park -  Presque Isle is beautiful in the winter.  The winter winds pack ice dunes on to the beaches and far out into the lake.  On a cold enough winter it's possible to walk (25 miles) to Canada.  Although not recommended, people walk far out into the lake.  People take huts to fish in, snow mobiles, and I've even seen Pickup trucks out on the lake.  There also is much wildlife to be seen in the park as well as an educational center.

Presque Isle Downs & Casino - This one is not for the kids, however many love our new Casino.  Push the kids off on some other team parent and go try your luck

Erie Wineries - Erie is one of the leading agricultural producers of grapes in the US.  Erie is home to Welsh's which produces Jellies & Juices.  Erie is also home to about 15 different wineries.  We recommend the Niagara variety (really good).  The tours are suitable to take children to and they all offer non-alcoholic varieties.  We recommend Mazza - they come to our gym and sponsor our meet! Grapes on the vineyards of North East, Pennsylvania.
