Boys Gymnastics

Kevin O'Brien - Westpoint MC - Iron Cross Jonathan Vicary - Front Plange Dave Nowakowski - Temple Univ.
Early in my career -  One father sat with his 12 year old boy watching his daughter do gymnastics.  You could tell by the boys face that he really wanted to join in the fun.  I said to the father - "Why don't you sign your boy up for class?"  He said "Hell no, my boy plays football, I am not signing him up for a sissy sport!"  That got my gander up.  "Is he a good player?" I asked.  "Yeah he replied he's one of the best on the team."  Just then some of our young girls team members were walking in the gym.  I said to the man - "Is your boy strong?"  "Of course he is strong!" he replied.  I said to him - "See those little girls over there - they can beat your boy at any strength contest you can think of, I'll put money on it!"  He took the bait.  I said that I would give his daughter free gymnastics lessons for the rest of the year vs. him signing up his son for lessons for the rest of the year.  He said "Your On!"  I let him pick, and we did push-ups.  The little 8 year old gymnasts tripled his sons effort.  They also beat him at pull-ups, inverted sit-ups and leg lifts....  I then told him, our Men's Team is stronger than those little girls, and many are the same age.  He was impressed and enthusiastically signed his boy up for the Boys Class.
Men's Artistic Gymnastics Events
Men's Gymnastics consists of 6 Events.  Each event challenges the body & mind in a unique way.
Vault:  Vault is pure speed & power.  The gymnast runs at full speed, bounces from a small spring board to the Vault where he propels himself through a series of flips & twists.
Parallel Bars:  On the P-Bars, arm strength & balance are dominant.  The gymnast must smoothly propel himself - over, under & around the stationary bars.  He must show strength, daring, balance & power.  Upon completion of the skills, the gymnast must dismount with flips & twist.
Floor Exercise:  On the Floor, a gymnast must demonstrate numerous types of flips and combinations.  The gymnast must demonstrate back, side & front tumbling sequences to score well.  The gymnast must demonstrate daring, control, power & strength.
Still Rings:  The rings are sheer upper-body strength.  Gymnasts must demonstrate a variety of strength & swinging skills without having the rings swing away.
Pommel Horse:  The Pommel Horse is by far the hardest men's event to master.  The gymnasts perform circles & swings on the horse & pommels while centrifugal force tries to throw them off the horse.  It is sheer upper-body strength, determination & balance.
Hight Bar:
The High Bar is perhaps the most exciting Men's Event to watch.  The boys perform circles (giants) around the bar with intricate hand positions.  The most exciting skills are the 'release moves' where the gymnast flips & twists 15 feet in the air, and re-catches the bar.  During their swings, a gymnasts feet are moving over 70 mph, this allows for an exciting dismount.
